\n\u00a0As a lawyer,\u00a0 I also often receive inquiries from foreign nationals regarding the family register (koseki).
\n\u00a0Therefore, today I would like to talk about the family register.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n

\nWhat is Koseki?<\/b><\/h4>\n
\u00a0This may sound complicated at first, but let me explain:
\n\u00a0The elements that identify a person (for example, name, sex, date of birth, parentage, marital status, etc.) constitute what is referred to as a person\u2019s\u00a0status\u00a0<\/i>(Mibun).
\n\u00a0Koseki is the system in which information related to a person\u2019s status\u2014ranging from birth to death (such as a change of name, change of sex, or marriage)\u2014is recorded.<\/div>\n

\nWhat is written in Koseki?<\/b><\/h4>\n
\u00a0In addition to the registered domicile (honseki<\/i>), the family register records the following:<\/div>\n
    \n
  • Name<\/li>\n
  • Date of birth<\/li>\n
  • Cause for being entered into the register (such as birth or marriage)<\/li>\n
  • Names and relationship of the natural parents<\/li>\n
  • In the case of adoption, the names and relationship of the adoptive parents<\/li>\n
  • Spouse status (husband or wife)<\/li>\n
  • Indication of prior koseki in cases where a person moved from another koseki<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What is the Registered Domicile (<\/b>Honseki<\/i><\/b>)?<\/b><\/h4>\n

    \u00a0An important concept is honseki<\/i>\u00a0(registered domicile).
    \n\u00a0The\u00a0honseki<\/i>\u00a0refers to the location in Japan where a person\u2019s koseki is maintained.
    \n\u00a0The municipality where the register is located is called the\u00a0honseki-chi<\/i>\u00a0(registered domicile locality).
    \n\u00a0In contrast,\u00a0address<\/i>\u00a0(j\u016bsho) refers to one\u2019s actual residence, and does not necessarily coincide with the\u00a0honseki<\/i>.
    \n\u00a0The\u00a0address<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0honseki<\/i>\u00a0are distinct concepts.<\/p>\n

    \nWhen is Koseki Used?<\/b><\/h4>\n
    \u00a0Many Japanese are aware that a certified copy of the family register (koseki tohon<\/i>) is required when applying for a passport.
    \n\u00a0Additionally, when a foreign national is naturalized in Japan, a family register is created.
    \n\u00a0I often review family registers in connection with inheritance inquiries.
    \n\u00a0Examples of such inquiries include:<\/div>\n
      \n
    • \u201cA family member has passed away and I obtained koseki, but a relative resides overseas\u2014how should the inheritance be handled in such a case?\u201d<\/li>\n
    • \u201cA family member has passed away and I obtained koseki, but the name of a person I don\u2019t know from a foreign country is listed\u2014how should I contact this person?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
