School Graduation and Status of Residence

I believe that there is lots of international students graduated from vocational schools or universities last month. Depending on the environment in which they have studied and their future career path, their status of residence may change in various ways.

First, what if you get a job related to what you have studied? For example, if you graduate from an IT-related school and are employed as a system engineer or programmer, or if you graduate from an accounting-related school and are employed as an accountant. In these cases, you can change your status of residence to ” Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services “, which is a status of residence for employment.

In addition, in cases where the student has graduated from a Japanese high school as well as a university or vocational school, or has been attending a Japanese school since elementary school, it may be possible to change his/her status of residence to a “Permanent Resident” or ” Designated Activities” status, which does not restrict the type of work he/she can do, once he/she has graduated and has found a job.

So what if, unfortunately, you are unable to find a job by the time you graduate from school? If you have been properly engaged in job hunting since you attended university or vocational school, you may be able to obtain a status of residence for job hunting if you cannot find a job after graduation. Under this status, you can also obtain permission to work part-time up to 28 hours per week (Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted) during the period you are engaged in job hunting activities.
